Elle laisse sur le bord de la route nombre de jeunes d\u00e9munis des acquis n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 leur insertion sociale, et ce malgr\u00e9 l\u2019allongement g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la scolarit\u00e9 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 au moins dix-huit ans. Les lacunes de ces jeunes tournent essentiellement autour de la notion d\u2019illettrisme. Elles affectent aussi leur aptitude au calcul et leurs connaissances scientifiques, historiques et g\u00e9ographiques de base. Cependant, la capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 lire et \u00e0 \u00e9crire sans difficult\u00e9 appara\u00eet comme centrale dans la mesure o\u00f9 elle \u00e9taie largement l\u2019aptitude \u00e0 suivre un raisonnement, \u00e0 saisir et former des concepts, \u00e0 argumenter et, finalement, \u00e0 comprendre. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\">Or, \u00e0 cet \u00e9gard, les enqu\u00eates r\u00e9alis\u00e9es par divers organismes officiels sont \u00e9loquentes. D\u00e9j\u00e0 en 1989, le rapport Migeon et une enqu\u00eate men\u00e9e dans les coll\u00e8ges r\u00e9v\u00e9laient qu\u2019environ 40% des \u00e9l\u00e8ves entrant en sixi\u00e8me ne savaient pas lire correctement ni comprendre un texte simple. Une enqu\u00eate conduite par l\u2019Observatoire national de la Lecture (ONL) en 1995 montrait que 20% des jeunes de moins de 20 ans \u00e9taient \u00ab faibles [c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire mauvais] lecteurs \u00bb, que 33% de ceux qui avaient quitt\u00e9 l\u2019Ecole en fin de troisi\u00e8me \u00e9taient illettr\u00e9s, que 3% ne pouvaient lire qu\u2019en isolant chaque mot d\u2019un texte et ne d\u00e9passaient donc pas le stade du d\u00e9chiffrage, que 4% ne lisaient facilement que des phrases simples, et que 12% ne parvenaient pas \u00e0 lire, m\u00eame superficiellement, un texte simple et court. Inutile de dire qu\u2019il n\u2019y a aucune chance que ce syndicat se fasse entendre.
